When you first arrived in Germany, you should apply for your
residential permit immediately. Yes, you are allowed to stay in Germany for up
to 3 months without visa as a US citizen. But if you'd like to stay longer
after your residential permit expires, you will have your remaining days from
the 90 days limit. So, if you waited 60 days to apply for your permit, this
will give you 30 days allowance after your permit expires.
I would recommend everyone to apply as soon as possible,
just in case if there's any last minute change of your stay. Remember to take a
morning walk to the office, expect long waits, and bring all documents they
asked for.
Remember to bring all these items below to avoid the lady
giving you problems:
1. A valid identity card or passport
2. Two passport photographs
3. Proof of health insurance
4. Your residence registration (Anmeldebestätigung)
5. Proof of means of support (usually a letter from your
employer) or - in case of students or non-employed - of adequate financial
resources (Finanzierungsnachweis - around €700/month)
6. Proof of your registration at university
If you are staying for less than 6 months, you will receive a sticker immediately for your passport, stating that you are now allowed to stay in Germany until its expiration date. However, if you are staying for more than 6 months, you will most likely receive a credit-card-like permit card. There should be a letter sent to your address in Germany from Berlin within 3-5 weeks. When you do receive the letter from Berlin, call & make an reservation/appointment to pick up for residential permit.
Good luck!
